Tesla, the electric vehicle business owned by billionaire Elon Musk, is set to build the world's largest ever lithium-ion battery.

The mega battery will be used to store energy for French energy giant Neoen's Hornsdale Wind Farm, which is now still under construction near Jamestown.

However, under the agreement, Tesla must deliver the battery within 100 days of the contract being signed or it will be free.

"Failing to hit the deadline would cost Tesla "$50 million or more", he said.

"I'm thrilled with the selection of Neoen and Tesla, whose experience and world leadership in energy security and renewables will help South Australia take charge of its energy future".

South Australia got it worst with a state-wide blackout in September. As a result, the state government sought to use renewable energy connected to energy storage systems to provide more reliable power.

In September a year ago, Australia was hit by an extreme storm which managed to knock the power out for the entirety of South Australia.

The battery will live in the state of South Australia, home to 1.7 million people who regulary suffer from power cuts and energy shortages. It said the project's capacity will be three times that of the current biggest such battery installation. Arrays of battery packs will store energy generated by renewable sources in an effort created to help alleviate blackouts.

The historic agreement between French renewable energy provider Neoen, the South Australian government, and Tesla will put South Australia at the forefront of global energy storage technology.

Tesla has now been picked to develop the world's largest grid-scale battery in South Australia.

Through a bidding process, Tesla secured the contract to provide the entire energy storage system component of the project.

Musk also said that if the project is not completed in 100 days, it will be free, honoring a pledge he made a few months ago.

Tesla will install the world's largest lithium ion battery in South Australia after 1.7 million people were left without power following a storm a year ago.

In addition to the Powerwall improving the overall reliability of South Australia's electrical infrastructure, Tesla announced the system is also being installed for residential customers across Australia.
