Hydrogen One Is Camera Maker Red's First Smartphone

RED announces new $1195 Android phone with 5.7-inch Hydrogen One Is Camera Maker Red's First Smartphone
Lucas Bell | 08 July, 2017, 00:35

This new smartphone will come with a 5.7-inch Professional Hydrogen Holographic display that features nanotechnology which will switch between traditional 2D content, 3D content, holographic multi-view content and games seamlessly both in portrait and landscape mode.

In addition to the holographic display, the Hydrogen One is also a modular smartphone that will allow users to utilize the device with various attachments. And RED says its initial price quote may not hold up by the time Hydrogen One hits store shelves. We aren't yet sure about what types of modules will be available, but I can tell you one thing, they probably won't be cheap. RED says that the design of this handset may change before the actual release and that it cannot guarantee these prices at the time of release however.

Quiz: What do you know about Android? Customers can already pre-order the device on Red's website.

The RED Hydrogen One is now slated to begin shipping in Q1 2018. RED says that it'll also throw in a "special small token" if you order one early.

It sounds a bit pompous, but given RED's expert reputation we it comes to cameras, we can't wait to see what the Hydrogen One has to offer.

Are you exhausted of looking at a regular old phone screen?

The teaser image clearly shows a headphone jack, USB-C port, and a rather big (and serious) looking camera protruding out of the backside.

However, RED has made it clear that the smartphone will be released in limited quantity and the prices of the smartphone may change when it hits the shelves.

The company says the phone will ship in early 2018, and it's now available for preorder on RED's website. Other more important specs like screen resolution, RAM, internal storage and processor specs have been left out... for now. You can now preorder it on the RED website, where the standard Aluminum version will cost $1,195 and the Titanium variant is priced at $1,595. With the suggestion that later orders might not be fulfilled on time, due to production limitations with the display. "We just added holography and stereo 3D for good measure".
