UNESCO declares West Bank city of Hebron as World Heritage Site in Danger

Hebron is the largest Palestinian city in the occupied West Bank with a population of some 200,000.
Hebron's old city is the only city-center in the occupied West Bank, excluding East Jerusalem, where Palestinians and Israeli settlers live side-by-side.

The decision by the UN's cultural agency, at a meeting in Poland by secret ballot, saw 12 countries vote in favor, with three against and six abstentions. Late a year ago, the organization also passed two resolutions denying Jewish claims to Jerusalem, just as archaeologists uncovered even more evidence of the centuries-old Jewish presence in Jerusalem.
The resolution was fast-tracked on the basis that the site was under threat, with Palestinians accusing Israel of an "alarming" number of violations, including vandalism and damage to properties.
By today's vote, the committee failed to take into account its own expert advice, which opposed the Palestinian nomination for failing to properly recognize Hebron's Jewish and Christian heritage.
The decision draws attention to the situation in Hebron and obliges the World Heritage committee to review its situation every year.
The tomb has traded hands many times over the centuries, variously under the control of the Romans, Arab rulers, the Crusaders, the Ottomans, and the British.
