China has deployed troops to its first overseas naval base in Djibouti, a major step forward for the country's expansion of its military presence abroad.

Members of China's People's Liberation Army marked the incident at a ceremony at a naval base in the southern Chinese port of Zhanjiang on Tuesday, the Chinese Defense Ministry announced on its website.

The People's Liberation Army Daily said in a front-page commentary that the new base would help China fulfil its obligations in ensuring global peace, working with its huge United Nations peacekeeping force in Africa and its anti-piracy patrols.

According to the report, as the number of troops in PLA Army is decreased, the number of troops in the PLA Navy, PLA Strategic Support Force, and the PLA Rocket Force will be increased.

In any case, China's military advancement was tied in with ensuring its own particular security, it said. The stated aim of the base is to buttress China's peacekeeping efforts on the continent, as well as providing ongoing support to ships under threat from pirates in the region.

"The use of the logistics base in Djibouti will enable China to fulfill its worldwide duty more efficiently, including patrol missions and participation in humanitarian operations", Geng said at a briefing.

In a bid to win influence over the government and its people in recent years, both China and Saudi Arabia have poured vast amounts of money into the country to support infrastructure projects, education, and training programs. It also embarked on its first foreign peacekeeping mission in South Sudan in 2015. Djibouti might appear to be an unassuming African state, but its location makes it strategic for military superpowers. "It bodes well there is consideration on this from outside general sentiment", said the paper, which is distributed by the official People's Daily, said.

China officially describes Djibouti, its first overseas naval base, as a logistics facility.

Japanese government sources said previous year that Tokyo will be expanding its base in Djibouti, to counter what it sees as growing Chinese influence in the region.

Paice points out that China made a substantial investment in Djibouti - about $500 million, according to reports - to build the Djibouti portion of a rail line to the capital of neighboring Ethiopia.
