Lightning does strike twice after all, with big-serving American Sam Querrey ending Andy Murray's Wimbledon title defence with another rousing display on sport's most famous centre court.

Murray and Querrey have met in the past eight times. Murray beat Frenchman Benoit Paire in straight sets (7-6, 6-4, 6-4) during Monday's Round of 16 match to advance to the quarter-final for the tenth consecutive time at the All-England Tennis Club.

Querrey reached the quarters at last year's tournament, his best result in a grand slam but was unable to go the distance against Milos Raonic.

The 29-year-old, who was cheered on by his model girlfriend Abby Dixon, becomes the first United States tennis player to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon since 2009.

"I'm still in a little bit of shock myself", Querrey said. "I didn't start my best, I just kept with it, kept swinging away and then just kind of found my rhythm in the fourth and fifth set and then everything seemed to be falling my way then".

'It feels great - this is a dream come true, to be in the semi-finals and to have it at Wimbledon makes it feel more special.

"Querrey has had some long matches but he has a day off tomorrow to ensure an easy day and then get ready for Friday".

Querrey, who beat Djokovic in the third round past year, will next meet seventh-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic, who defeated 16th-seeded Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 Court 1.

He has only won one title, in Dubai in February, but Novak Djokovic's retirement against Tomas Berdych means Murray will hang on to the world number one ranking for now. There was obviously an opportunity.

"I'm not trying to place it more", Murray said. "Still a huge match in front of me and in front of Roger, as well".

Querrey was blighted by a series of unforced errors as Murray comfortably took the first set, but the American built momentum late in the second and levelled the match by reeling off three games in a row.

Meanwhile, Hewitt said, world No1 Murray's handling of his hip injury and overcoming his lack of grass-court warm-up matches had been "impressive". The end of the fourth set and fifth set, I felt like he hardly missed any first serves. Murray won the tournament in 2016, only to be knocked out in 2017 by Querrey. "Hopefully I can get into my rhythm and play good tennis". Maybe that can have a small part in playing that match.

"I'm sure moving forward I'll be able to get through it (the hip problem). I'm sad it's over". "I don't think anyone has ever stayed at number one their whole career". But Federer set up match point with an ace, then won when Raonic hit a return wide.
