According to one account, Mr Blazer was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and an Internal Revenue Service official in 2011 as he rode his scooter to a favorite NY restaurant.

Blazer was CONCACAF's General Secretary from 1990 to 2011.

Blazer had accused another former CONCACAF president, Jack Warner, of having pocketed funds from a $10m project to support the African diaspora in Caribbean countries at the time of South Africa's successful bid to stage the 2010 World Cup.

Disgraced US football official Chuck Blazer has died at the age of 72, his lawyers say.

Blazer said he and others on the Federation Internationale de Football Association executive committee took bribes for South Africa to host the 2010 World Cup.

Love him or loathe him, no-one can deny Chuck Blazer his legendary place in the annals of football politics.

I Will Follow The Facts — FBI Director Appointee
He headed the department's criminal division from 2003 to 2005, and from 2001-2002 he was the deputy attorney general's deputy. But he would also help carry out Attorney General Jeff Sessions's focus on fighting illegal immigration and violent crime.

Blazer was banned from football for life in 2015 by FIFA for what the governing body called his "many acts of misconduct" at the organisation and as General Secretary of the Concacaf confederation.

He agreed to cooperate to provide evidence for the larger investigation from 2011 and in 2013 pleaded guilty to multiple charges that included money laundering and wire fraud conspiracy.

But Blazer's cooperation and the information he provided ultimately played a huge part in the 2015 arrests of numerous other individuals and a statement from his lawyers upon his death explained that he had "accepted full responsibility" for his past criminal actions.

"At one moment, he looked at me with a very serious gaze and said, without cracking a smile, "You know, you look like Karl Marx!" His misconduct, for which he accepted full responsibility, should not obscure Chuck's positive impact on global soccer", the statement read. He did a lot for the sport.

Those barely existent TV deals soon exploded into contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and Blazer's opportunity for enrichment only grew when he was elected to FIFA's ruling executive committee in 1996, a position he held for 17 years. The only acknowledgement of Blazer's death by U.S. Soccer was a comment in a news conference by national team coach Bruce Arena.

At one point, Chuck had a $6,000 a month apartment at Trump Tower, exclusively for his cats, reports The Washington Post.
