Jimmy Carter back to building homes after hospital treatment

Saul Franklin | 15 July, 2017, 00:43

Carter, 92, was rushed to St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Canada, on Thursday, after he collapsed working on a Habitat for Humanity home due to dehydration.

Habitat for Humanity CEO Jonathan Reckford said the former president did not appear to be in serious medical danger.

The former US president kicked off the final day of the build with a devotional at 8 a.m. following an overnight stay in the hospital due to dehydration from working in the heat.

Along with volunteers that included country singers Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, the Carters were working to build over 100 homes across Canada.

Carter told local news station 630 CHED, "When we get through with this build here, we'll look back and say 'this was one of the best we ever had'".

Two years ago, former President Jimmy Carter announced to the world that he was battling cancer. He was treated by paramedics who took him away in an ambulance, without using lights or siren, the newspaper said.

Friday is the last day of the annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project in Canada. Carter continued to volunteer for Habitat while being treated for cancer, working alongside volunteers at a home in Memphis in November 2015.
