United States stocks open higher on Yellen comments, energy strength

The S&P 500 is up 34.09 points, or 1.4 percent.

A handful of large companies already have reported results, but statements coming Friday from JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo will begin the earnings season in earnest.

The S&P climbed 0.6 percent to close at 2,459.27, setting intraday and closing records.

Companies in the S&P 500 are expected to report an increase of six percent in operating earnings per share compared with the year-ago period, according to CFRA Research.

Germany's DAX lifted 0.1 per cent to 12,641.33.
