The world's largest social network reported Q2 2017 earnings of $3.89 billion, or $1.41 per share, up 71 percent from $1.56 billion in the same period a year earlier and easily beating Wall Street expectations. Mobile ad revenue made up about 87% of ad revenue for the second quarter, a slight increase from 84% in last year's second quarter.

Last quarter Facebook an annual revenue increase of 49% year-on-year, this is compared to a 45% total revenue increase during the three months to June 30.

Zuckerberg's company faces increased competition from the likes of picture messaging app Snapchat, which said on Wednesday it had passed over one billion daily active users. "Our community is now two billion people and we're focusing on bringing the world closer together", said Facebook's founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook doesn't disclose revenue numbers for Instagram, but the platform reached 700 million monthly active users in April.

The results sent the stock to a high of $173 in after-hours trading - up 5 percent from its closing price - scoring a record market cap of about $496 billion.

Facebook has not said how much of its revenue is attributable to its Instagram unit, though the photo-sharing app has become a greater focus of its business. Facebook will also have to learn how to better monetise video ads, since users watching videos may stay in one spot on the News Feed rather than scrolling past more ads. Operating margin was 47 percent last quarter, up from 41 percent in first quarter of 2017 and 42 percent in year-ago quarter. That 0.01 is just a measly 10 million people.

The Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) growth story apparently has no end.

In the previous two such calls the company's leadership have used the opportunity to warn of a potential slowdown in its revenue growth rate.

Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014.

Facebook's hot streak continued with a strong Q2 2017 earnings report.

Zuckerberg said the top goal for Messenger remains making "it so that people organically interact with businesses". "We do not manage this company quarter to quarter".

Earlier in the call, however, CFO David Wehner cautioned that ads on videos and Instagram don't have the kind of impression growth that investors are accustomed to seeing on Facebook's newsfeed ads.

Facebook's growth has slowed significantly over the past year, and unless the company is able to generate more money from an increasingly stagnant user base, it's likely that growth will fall further.
