Overall, those with the lowest risk of developing diabetes were people who drank moderately on a weekly basis, Tolstrup's analysis showed.
Data taken from more than 70,000 drinkers found that drinking most days of the week was associated with a significantly reduced risk - 27% in men and 32% in women - compared with abstaining.
Women can cut their odds by nearly a third, with the polyphenols from the grapes in red wine believed to help control blood sugar.
Wine will reduce the risk by more than 25 percent and beer by 21 percent for both men and women.
This is tricky. Those who drink heavily consume "empty calories" and sugar that the body may not be able to metabolize properly, hence leading to diabetes.
In the past studies have suggested that light to moderate drinking can reduce the risk of developing diabetes but no research has ever explored the frequency of alcohol consumption. In a 5-year follow up, respondents had to state whether their drinking frequency increased, decreased, or remained stable over the last five years.
Over the course of follow-up, 859 men and 887 women developed type 2 diabetes, for an incidence rate of 619 and 436 per 100,000 person-years, respectively.

That glass of wine or pint of beer you enjoy with dinner every night might come with an added benefit - a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, a new Danish study contends. Specifically, the study found that for men, drinking 14 drinks per week was associated with a 41 percent lower risk of diabetes compared with no drinks, and for women, drinking nine drinks per week was associated with a 58 percent lower risk of diabetes.
The research, published by Professor Janne Tolstrup and colleagues from the National Institute of Public Health of the University of Southern Denmark, explored what influence drinking patterns had on men and women developing diabetes. The alcoholic beverage not only acts as a stress reliever, it can also protect us from diabetes. People who have diabetes either don't make enough insulin or don't use it effectively.
However, women should steer clear of the gin because this botanical spirit increases ladies chance of getting diabetes by 83%.
Binge drinking or heavy drinking is defined as 4 or more drinks for women and 5 or more drinks for men during a single occasion.
"Several factors contribute to it, including family history, ethnic background, age and being overweight".
The risk of diabetes could be reduced by moderate alcohol consumption, a new study suggests.
Those who binge-drink, rather than drinking small amounts regularly, could reverse the benefits of alcohol by causing weight gain, which is one of the causes of type 2diabetes. Some of the most recent studies have linked moderate drinking with cognitive decline, brain damage and risk of cardiovascular ailments. Alcohol, of course, can impact mental health too.
