Kelly's Department of Homeland Security is responsible for enforcing border security and has taken a tough line on immigrants inside the United States.

Priebus said he had offered his resignation on Thursday and the president accepted.

Priebus said the president wanted go "a different direction" and that it was "a healthy thing". "I am on Team Trump", he said. "I'm on Team Trump".

"He is a Great American and a Great Leader", Trump said.

"I have been fortunate to have served my country for more than 45 years - first as a Marine and then as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security".

Trump added: "He has been a true star of my Administration".

In picking Kelly, Trump may also be betting on getting his agenda through Congress more effectively.

"I would like to thank Reince Priebus for his service and dedication to his country", Trump said.

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted his congratulations to Kelly, "Congratulations to my friend General/Secretary John Kelly for being named @WhiteHouse Chief of Staff". Priebus, however, has denied leaking any information from the West Wing.

Oil extends gains, on track for biggest weekly rise this year (RDSA)
Crude oil futures posted their biggest weekly gain of the year amid signs the global supply glut could be over within a year. US oil drillers added two rigs in the most recent week, the third week of gains, raising the overall rig count to 766.

It also comes a week after Trump hired Wall Street businessman Anthony Scaramucci, a move that sparked a long-rumored shake-up among the president's top aides. That followed tweets and an interview in which Scaramucci appeared to link Priebus to leaks from the White House.

House Speaker Paul Ryan says Reince Priebus served President Donald Trump and the American people capably, passionately and with class.

House speaker Paul Ryan, senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, national economic council director Gary Cohn and others said: "There are many unknowns associated with it and [we] have chose to set this policy aside in order to advance tax reform".

Priebus's ouster was the latest convulsion in a White House that has been whipsawed by feuds and political setbacks in recent days. He has lobbed Twitter insults at Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently though Sessions is still in place.

In the CNN interview, Priebus refused to respond to Scaramucci's vulgar comments about him or his allegations that he was a leaker. The chief of staff took the return flight to Washington, his fate sealed in the tweets that were sent by the president just as Priebus stepped off the plane. The president eventually emerged, umbrella in hand, and delivered a brief statement on the runway as driving rain poured.

Trump issued his decision just as he landed aboard Air Force One after a visit to Long Island and hours after Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare failed in the Senate. "The president and Republicans insisted the DHS secretary be confirmed on day one but now the president leaves this critical national security cabinet post vacant". From day one, his power has been limited compared with past officials with his title.

Priebus and Scaramucci both traveled Friday with Trump for a crime speech on Long Island in NY. With a retired general in charge of his White House now, the president hopes to bring in some discipline and end the current mess inside the White House. "I can't think of a better person than General John Kelly to succeed me and I wish him God's blessings and great success", Priebus said.

His exit had quietly been in the works for weeks.

"Welp, it looks like someone's just been thrown under the Priebus", one Twitter user wrote.
