Tesla TSLA, -0.10% late July launched the Model 3, its $35,000 all-electric sedan aimed at the masses, a linchpin of the company's expansion plans.

The rating agency said the overall company's "B2" rating was supported by the fact that if Tesla ends up in serious financial trouble, its brand name, products and physical assets would be of "considerable value" to other automakers. In the past when Tesla has been short for cash, the company turned to sales of stock.

That puts this Model 3, presumably a 310-mile Long Range version with the larger of two battery options, in third place for energy efficiency among all new cars on sale in the US for 2017. In fact, there were around 63,000 customers who canceled their reservations as the original number of pre-orders was disclosed to be 518,000 cars.

Following comments from management last week, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) announced this morning that it intends to raise $1.5 billion in debt. So as Tesla ramps up production over the next two years to deliver the Model 3 to those hundreds of thousands of people who preordered the vehicle, we're going to find out exactly what those masses think about this pared-down look.

As long as Elon Musk keeps talking about solar roofs and more Gigafactories, cash burn could remain quite high. The electric vehicle marker's cash burn, or negative free cash flow, came to $1.2 billion in the second quarter - almost double the $622 million spent in the previous quarter. In normal circumstances, investors would be skeptical of a bond offering of that size. The company's most-active bonds, the 2.375% notes that mature in March of 2022, were trading at a premium of 127.38 cents on the dollar, to yield 3.118%, according to MarketAxess.

While the move marks the first non-convertible bonds the company has issued, Tesla has engaged in many cash-generating offers in the recent past. CEO Elon Musk acknowledged on the earnings call that the company may look to raise capital, but was not considering an equity raise. While RBC capital markets analysts were also positive exiting Q2, analysts at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Cowen weren't too optimistic, citing huge Capex and downside risks to the model 3 production ramp-up. Obviously, Tesla stock isn't going to rise forever, and there is likely going to be a market crash sometime in the next few years ... but that doesn't mean that Einhorn isn't going to lose money with his current bets.
