Carnivorous sea lice 'eat' teenager's FEET in Australia

Still bleeding Sam Kanizay's wounds were still seeping blood on Sunday afternoon while doctors tried to work out what Bloodied Melbourne teen 'eaten' by mystery sea creatures

St Kilda player Koby Stevens has told reporters he avoided a close call with the same flesh-eating sea lice that tore apart the feet of Melbourne teenager over the weekend.

Marine biologists have said they were likely to have been sea fleas, tiny scavenging marine animals.

The couldn't staunch the flow, which seeped from pin prick sized holes, so Jarrod drove Sam to Sandringham Hospital emergency department.

Jarrod Kanizay, the teen's father, made a decision to take the investigation into his own hands, dropping a chunk of raw steak in water near the location of his son's attack.

Some are speculating that sea lice were what attacked the teen.

As his teenage son recovers in hospital after apparently being bitten by sea fleas, an Australian father has filmed a swarm of the flesh-eating creatures he captured at the same beach going insane for raw steak. Keough also said the Australian teenager may have been cold from being in the Brighton ocean water and may not have noticed numerous little bites being made into his flesh, at first. The BBC reported that Sam Kanizay had felt pins and needles while he was submerged up to his waist, and thought he was just rubbing sand off his legs when he got out. A pool of blood was formed on the floor at the hospital when his legs were wiped.

The video has been shared by a Melbourne father who said that his teenage son was attacked by those carnivores when he went for a dip.

The amphipods may disperse an anti-coagulant when they bite, which would explain why it was so hard to stop the bleeding.

Sam's father, Jarrod Kanizay, went back to the beach the following night with a pool net full of meat and captured the animals he believes could have been responsible.

Thanks to his video, experts were able to confidently identify the creatures as lysianassid amphipods, a type of scavanger shrimp-like crustacean commonly known as "sea fleas".

"They have sharp jaws, so the bite is quick and a bit painful, but nothing beyond that".

He found masses of the microscopic features were feasting on the meat, just as they had his son's legs. But they'd just take a bite of something big if they came past it.

A hospital staff guessed it to be sea lice as other staff members got on the internet to search for what possibly could have caused such bleeding.

"What is really clear is these little things really love meat", Mr Kanizay concluded.

Yikes. We'll let you know when researchers figure this one out.
