According to a report released yesterday by the Department of Transportation, for the first six months of 2017, the 12 biggest U.S. airlines reported an involuntary denied boarding, or bumping, rate of 0.52 per 10,000 passengers.

The 12 USA carriers that report incidents of involuntary denied boarding posted a bumping rate of 0.52 per 10,000 passengers compared to a rate of 0.62 from this time past year.

Following the early April incident at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, in which video of the passenger being roughly removed from the aircraft went viral, there was an outcry from consumer advocates who charged that United and O'Hare were acting improperly. A recent Guardian article reports that airlines could save $35 billion a year if they got rid of pilots and flew fully automated planes, according to a report released by the investment bank UBS.

Southwest has the biggest decline, bumping about 1,500 fewer passengers in the second quarter than it did a year ago.

Since an infamous incident this April, airlines have increased compensation to customers denied a seat and have also made other policy changes. The rate reflects 17,330 passengers involuntarily denied boarding out of 332,415,301.

United and other airlines have taken steps to reduce passenger bumping, including raising their incentive payment cap for voluntary denied bumping to $10,000.
