French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has confirmed the arrest of the man suspected of ramming a vehicle into a group of French soldiers Wednesday in a suburb of Paris, injuring six of them in what authorities say was a deliberate attack.

The driver who intentionally plowed a vehicle into a crowd of soldiers in a Paris suburb remained on the loose Wednesday as French police eyed a possible terror motive.

He said a BMW was parked near the soldiers' barracks and appeared to be waiting for them to come out.

A police spokesman said on Twitter: "Police intervention is underway".

The driver of the vehicle died in the attempted attack on the famous Paris avenue, which was the scene of two terror attacks in the space of three months.

A state of emergency in force since November 2015 includes highly visible patrols under Operation Sentinel, numbering some 7000 troops.

The area, quieter than normal in peak summer holiday season, was cordoned off after the incident, which happened at around 8:00 a.m. local time, police said.

The attack occurred outside a military barracks 200 metres from the town hall in Levallois-Perret, on the northeastern edge of Paris.

Mr Balkany said he had no doubt that the "disgusting" act was deliberate.

Four of the six hurt were described as having light injuries, police said.

The street is normally guarded by posts that are removed when vehicles move in and out, so the driver must have known exactly when to strike, Veillant said. "It hurtled at them.it accelerated rapidly", he told the TV station. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe confirmed that the person arrested is the same man who carried out the attack.

Most were released. But in one case, police stopped a auto on the A16 highway and arrested the driver and were verifying his possible links to the attack, according to two police officials. He told investigators he wanted to kill a soldier, sources close to the case told AFP.

Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo tweeted offering "all her support" to those injured, adding "I hope with all my heart that their attacker will be quickly apprehended".
