EPS faction says, appointment of Dhinakaran violates party rules

TN: Both AIADMK factions to merge after OPS, EPS meet with PM Tamil Nadu: Dinakaran moved from AIADMK party post, rivals factions likely to merge

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy and minister of his cabinet passed a resolution terming TTV Dinakaran's appointment as AIADMK deputy general secretary "illegal".

The AIADMK Amma faction has stated that the appointment of Dinakaran as Sasikala's deputy was done against party by-laws. Sources confirmed that the chief minister's group is likely to submit these resolutions to the Election Commission and seek defreezing of the AIADMK two-leaves symbol that could pave way for the merger of the EPS group and the faction led by former chief minister O Panneerselvam.

The resolution, however, stopped short of expelling him and Sasikala from the party, which is one of the main pre-condition of the OPS camp for the merger.

Referring to statewide tours announced by Dhinakaran which will commence on August 14, Sasikalas brother said such a move will facilitate ending differences in the party.

Soon after Sasikala, the then appointed deputy general secretary, TTV Dinakaran, her nephew, has to maintain the grip over the party.

The statement also declared that party cadres would not like to see anyone other than Jayalalithaa as general secretary which amounts virtually disowning Sasikala's temporary appointment as general secretary in December 2016 after Jayalalithaa's death.

A Tamil Nadu BJP official told Scroll.in that the two factions had been told that the AIADMK could join the Centre only if it came together as one.

Months after things going smooth in Tamil Nadu, Panneerselvam and Palaniswamy are all set to meet and are in plans for a merger. Nobody can remove the two leaders from party posts, he said indicating the thinking in the Dinakaran camp. Dhinakaran said the same leaders who were now talking against them were the ones who had campaigned for him in the RK Nagar bypoll which was subsequently cancelled.

The factions have been facing pressure to merge from the ruling BJP in New Delhi. Former minister KP Munusamy said two central demands of the faction are yet to be met.

He wondered how the EPS camp could comment against Sasikala when they themselves had furnished an affidavit to the EC, endorsing her appointment as party chief.

Dinakaran removed, EPS faction adopts resolution against Sasikala.

Interestingly, both Palaniswami and Panneerselvam are leaving for New Delhi late on Thursday to take part in the swearing-in ceremony of Vice-President-elect M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday.
