Trump resumes taunts of Senate GOP leader over health care

McConnell also told a Rotary Club meeting in Kentucky that Trump had "excessive expectations" for legislators. "After 7 years of hearing Repeal & Replace, why not done?"

And Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity, a fervent Trump backer, called McConnell "weak" and "spineless".

President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) for not being successful at repealing and replacing Obamacare.

President Donald Trump tapped Neil Chatterjee, who helped coordinate attacks against power-plant emissions rules as a senior adviser to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to lead a federal agency that oversees energy markets and approves pipelines.

"So, I say very simply, 'Where is repeal and replace?' Now I want tax reform and tax cuts".

Trump offered a congratulatory tweet for McConnell's victory in the 2014 Republican primary race, as the five-term senator defeated tea party-backed challenger Matt Bevin.

Trump and one of his main aides, Dan Scavino, rebutted that idea on Wednesday through Twitter.

Trump has tweeted about McConnell three times since, including an early afternoon tweet that urged the Senate Majority Leader to "Get back to work", and saying, "You can do it!" "You can do it!"

The conservative Brooks has criticized McConnell before, accusing him of doing a poor job of crafting a health care bill that could pass the Senate. The administration has also been mired in investigations into contacts between his presidential campaign and Russian Federation, and distracted by infighting among high-level White House staff. If the Republican Congress continues to fail to pass any serious legislation, there is a very good chance that the president's campaign rallies could intercede with the 2018 midterms, and it doesn't take a whole lot of imagination to envision the President of the United States actively campaigning against members of his own party.

But, even after McConnell was forced to delay that vote, he continued to push for passage of some sort of health care bill - ultimately coming up a single vote short. In an nearly patronizing tone, he's urging the Kentucky Republican to plunge into work on health care and other issues, though Congress is on recess until next month.

Republicans placed health care at the top of their 2017 agenda when the year began.

"Discerning a particular strategy or goal from these tweets is hard", said Doug Heye, a Republican consultant and former Capitol Hill staffer.

On energy, Trump is waiting for the McConnell-led Senate to confirm his nomination of Washington lawyer Kevin McIntyre as FERC chairman.
