School buses turn on flashing lights and deploy a stop sign when they halt to let students board or get off.

"Those two issues can be a hurdle", Nicole Schlosser, School Bus Fleet's managing editor, told USA Today.

"We patrol in marked and unmarked units behind the buses when we can", he said, adding that incidents seem to most frequently occur on the highways and occasionally on county roads. Drivers should not proceed until the passengers have completely loaded or unloaded and the bus is back in motion.

"Things we didn't do three four years ago, we didn't have to advertise because we always had a lot of applications and a lot of people coming in", said Don Boyanowski with Boyo Transportation, which provides school transportation in four counties in central Pennsylvania. Motorists should not attempt to pass the bus while it's stopped, but there are different rules for different roads.

There are now more than 16,000 school buses on the road in IN, and according to statistics, as the number of school buses increase, so does the number of school bus stop-arm violations.

As students return to school, the Georgia Department of Education is urging motorists to use caution when approaching a school bus and to brush up on the law regarding passing a bus.

But once drivers are on Veterans Parkway, which has a grass median, they must stop only for a bus going in their direction.

When approaching a school bus - from any direction - that is stopped with its flashing red lights activated and stop-arm extended, motorists are required to stop, even on multiple lane highways.

With more than 5,000 students attending school in the district, drivers said the new routes kept students on the buses longer and are unsafe. Previous year in Kentucky, three people died in bus accidents.

Be alert for school zones that have reduced speed limits when children are present.

Wait for OK to cross - Wait until the bus driver gives the OK sign or thumbs up to cross the street or get on the bus.
