Jordan Matthews Traded to the Bills

The Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams have completed a trade that sends wide receiver Sammy Watkins to Southern California. In exchange for Darby, the Bills will receive wide receiver Jordan Matthews and the Eagles' 2018 third round pick.

Altogether, the trade nets the Bills second-round and third-round picks in 2018, but leaves the roster in a lesser state for the 2017 season.

And while the Sammy Watkins news will generate the biggest headlines, sending the team's former first-round pick to the Rams, the other deal sends ripples into the wide receiver depth chart as well. Buffalo now owns six picks in the first three rounds of the 2018 draft - one in each round. While posting 60 receptions on 95 targets, he also produced 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns, both of which still serve as single-season career-high marks. He has been a starter in all 29 of his career games over the past two seasons. Nelson Agholor is under team control for the next two years, and Alshon Jeffery will be looking for a new deal at the end of the season.

Despite the production, the Eagles never got serious about working out a contract extension with Matthews, who is in the final year of his rookie deal.

As a result, the yield on the benchmark ten-year note, which moves opposite of its price, rose by 2.6 basis points to 2.283%. Brokerage stocks are among the few groups seeing notable weakness, with the NYSE Arca Broker/Dealer Index down by 1 percent.

The Bills never bottomed out as badly as the Browns in recent years, but Buffalo's impressive stash of draft selections rivals that of Cleveland, which is in full-blown rebuilding mode. Buffalo seems to be stockpiling picks for next year's draft.

Buffalo's overall approach with these trades, and specifically the loss of Watkins, can not sit well with starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor. "Love you bro. I'll definitely miss doing this with you!"

Talk and rumors about the Eagles' possibly trading Matthews have been floating for months and it's those rumors - true or not - that actually led to the Eagles' receiving calls about him, Roseman said. It never gets any easier in this business because however good he is as a player, he's a better person.
