Issuing a statement following an emergency meeting on Sunday, the human rights watchdog appealed the Nepal government, security agencies, national and global organizations to expedite the rescue and relief operation in flood and landslide affected settlements.

Landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rain have killed at least 47 people in southern Nepal and left thousands homeless, police said Sunday.

Warning over the possible occurrence of water-borne epidemic in the flood affected areas, the commission has urged the government to set up temporary medical camps for the protection of people. "Hundreds of volunteers from Nepal Red Cross Society are working with local people, local security forces and emergency teams to rescue people and evacuate them to safety", said Dev Ratna Dhakhwa, Secretary General, Nepal Red Cross Society.

More than 30 people were reported dead on Saturday.

Army and police continued search and rescue operations, with more than 34,000 houses submerged, the official added.

"Monsoon induced disasters have taken the lives of 64 people, 44 have been injured, 36 have gone missing and around 19,000 families have been displaced", a statement said. Other roads remain blocked by the landslides, slowing down the rescue efforts. Tarai region is worst affected by the flood.

Nepal's National News Agency reported Sunday that 600 tourists, including 400 foreigners, are trapped in the town of Sauraha in southwestern Nepal.

Meteorologists say the torrential rain will continue till Monday. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba ordered district administrations to intensify rescue operations.

Heavy rains have been battering Nepal and northern India for days now, and the death toll from this year's monsoon season - which usually lasts from June until the end of August - has already exceeded that of 2016.
