Following in the footsteps of Colin Kaepernick's silent protests a year ago, Lynch sat on a Gatorade cooler during the singing of the anthem, prior to Saturday night's preseason game between the Raiders and the Cardinals at University of Phoenix Stadium.

In a time of controversy and racial tension in the United States, Lynch chose the flawless moment to sit during the national anthem.

Manuel said the team supports Lynch, adding the decision was "more of a personal thing" for him.

People on social media, on the other hand, had plenty to say both for and against the move. The only one who referenced the issue was Raiders coach Jack Del Rio, who spoke to reporters after the game.

"I talked to Marshawn to make sure we were on the same page".

In response, del Rio said he strongly believes in "standing for the national anthem".

NYPD officer's bulletproof vest saves his life in Brooklyn shooting
Police said Thursday they're looking for two men in connection with a string of Brooklyn robberies between April and July. When they entered, the suspect opened fire, striking one cop in the right arm; two other shots hit his bulletproof vest.

Lynch was not in the National Football League during Colin Kaepernick's kneeling protest against racism and police brutality last season but has previously expressed his opinion on Kaepernick's action.

The star running back didn't play a single down on Saturday and the Raiders lost to the Cardinals 20-10, but Lynch easily generated the most attention to the exhibition game.

"He said, 'This is something I have done for 11 years".

Lynch, a five-time Pro Bowler, is known for shunning the media and did not elaborate on his decision to sit out the anthem.

Lynch did not clarify why he generally sits during the national anthem, as he told Del Rio.

"I just hope people open up their eyes to see that it's really a problem going on and something needs to be done for it to stop", Lynch told comedian Conan O'Brien in September 2016. "If you really not racist, then you won't see what (Kaepernick is) doing as a threat to America, but just addressing a problem that we have".
