As the 23-year-old Ethiopian Muktar Edris held his lead and the track began to run out despite the desperate exhortations from the stands, some may have thrown in the towel.

Farah retires from the sport at the end of August after the Diamond League final in Zurich. The following week, when the Olympics had finished, I was known worldwide. It's been an awesome journey. I wanted to end on a high. To finish here is a nice thing.

Farah added: "It's like a broken record, repeating myself, if I've crossed the line, if Alberto's crossed the line. why bring it up year after year, making it into headlines?" I gave my all. Putting my balls on the line, year after year and delivering for my country.

Farah still doubled Great Britain's medal tally having already won the 10,000m last week with the 34-year-old the only GB athlete to have won any honour at the home championships.

Edris lifted his first ever major senior world title in 13:32.79, leaving two-time Olympic 5,000 titlist and newly crowned 10,000m victor Farah to the second place in 13:33.22.

Farah certanly got cheered to the rafters when he won his two Olympic and world gold and silver medals in London and has been ennobled by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his achievements.

"Silver on this occasion stung like defeat and salt was rubbed into open wounds by his conqueror, Muktar Edris of Ethiopia, performing the iconic Mobot at the finish".

"It's taken him [Edris] years to be able to beat me and finally they got that last night".

"It's no secret to what we do".
