Both presidents Bush released a joint statement on the last weekend's violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Wednesday, the same day of a memorial service held in honor of a young woman who was killed protesting the white supremacists who'd traveled there to rally.

"America must always reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred in all forms", the statement, issued Wednesday morning, reads.

"While our prayers go out to Charlottesville, we come to remember these basic truths laid out in the Declaration of independence by the most eminent of the citizens of this city (Thomas Jefferson, editor's NOTE): "all men are created equal; they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights", ' write the two Bush. We know these truths to be everlasting because we have seen the decency and greatness of this country".

The Bushes are the only living former presidents who are Republicans.

"This week, it is Robert E. Lee and this week, Stonewall Jackson". Ji-won, even by President Trump's standards, his remarks sparked a lot of controversy, what's the latest?

Former US presidents George H W Bush (L) and George W Bush said in a joint statement: "America must always reject racial bigotry, anti-Semitism, and hatred in all forms".

On Wednesday night, hundreds of people gathered on the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville for a peaceful candlelight vigil.

Trump on Tuesday all but retracted his condemnation of white supremacist groups, saying that counterprotesters, which he dubbed the "alt-left", bore as much responsibility for the violence as hate groups.

"This is awful. The president of the United States needs to condemn these kind of hate groups", Kasich said on NBC's Today show.

He continued on to say there is no "moral equivalency" between the hate groups "and anybody else".

House Speaker Paul Ryan said "white supremacy is repulsive" in a tweet, adding: "This bigotry is counter to all this country stands for".

Amid the fraying ties with his party, Trump planned a rally next Tuesday in Arizona, home state of two Republican US senators, John McCain and Jeff Flake, who have been particularly critical of him.

Also on Wednesday, Hope Hicks, a close aide to Mr Trump, was named interim White House director of communications, temporarily taking the post left vacant after Anthony Scaramucci was sacked last month, a senior White House official said.
