Maryland's GOP Governor Calls For Removal Of Statue Recalling Slavery

In January 1837, Taney took his seat on the Supreme Court Bench and earned recognition for his decision in the case of Dred Scott.
He also noted Taney's many roles in public service, including state lawmaker, Maryland attorney general, US secretary of war, USA attorney general and USA treasury secretary. His statue sits outside of the State House.
"Taney was regarded as a very good Catholic", Father Michael Roach, a Church historian, told the Catholic Review in 2012.
Miller, who is known to be an avid reader of history, credited the former chief justice for "anti-slavery words and actions", saying that "unlike George Washington who freed his slaves upon his death, Taney freed his slaves early in his life".
A panel voted by email Wednesday to remove the statue, which was erected in 1872. A year ago he called the push for the statue to be moved from the state house lawn "political correctness run amok".
Three of the Trust's four members supported the decision to remove the second Taney statue.
On Aug. 11, white supremacists gathered at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville to protest the removal of a monument to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. "I thought he did a really bad job responding to it", Gov. Larry Hogan said of Trump's comments in recent days.
"Voting on this matter by email was just plain wrong", Miller wrote, noting that he had requested a public meeting, after Speaker Busch and Governor Hogan had both called for the statue's removal.
President Trump tweeted Thursday, "Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our lovely statues and monuments".
The fourth member yet to weigh in is Senate President Mike Miller. Historians say that the court's decision was responsible, in part, for driving the country toward civil war.
The scene during the removal process was peaceful. A small crowd cheered when the statue was lifted from its base.
Taney was born in Maryland and practiced law in Frederick before becoming the nation's fifth chief justice. Scott was a slave in Missouri who was taken to IL, a free state.
This year marked the 160th anniversary of the 1857 decision. There's an irony, however, in Taney statues coming down during a national debate on the merits of Confederate monuments: Taney wasn't a Confederate soldier at all.
Taney wrote that granting blacks citizenship would be "abe abuse of terms not calculated to exalt the character of the American citizen in the eyes of other nations".
