Finnish police patrols on motorbike after stabbings in Turku
19 August, 2017, 07:49
Finnish police have shot a man who stabbed several people in the city of Turku, according to law enforcement.
It's also not clear how many people took part in the attack.
The suspect - a man whose identity was not known - was being treated in the city's main hospital but was in police custody. The incident is not now being investigated as a terror attack, but that could change as new information becomes available.
The suspect was described as "a young foreigner" late Friday and taken to hospital after being shot in the thigh, police said. While Finnish broadcasterYLE claimed that three people were injured, other reports have said that as many as six people were hurt in the attack.
Police assured Turku residents the city was safe on Friday evening.
The attack comes just one day after a van plowed into pedestrians on a popular tourist street in Barcelona, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100 others.
Authorities did not immediately identify the attacker or state what his motivations may be.
Images on Twitter show at least one body covered by a white sheet on the ground.
Police warned that several other suspects could still be at large.
Bystanders had rushed to the scene to help the victims.
One of those stabbed was reported to be a woman pushing a buggy. She didn't witness the attack, but heard emergency sirens going past. "She was crying hysterically, down on her knees, saying someone's neck has been slashed open".
The suspect is now being treated in hospital.
