The Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety posted a picture on its Facebook page of an injured pelican rescued by officers Sunday afternoon.

Another Floridian, Marcelo Clavijo, also posted about finding the manatees, saying the group put the animals onto tarps and dragged them into the water.

"We rolled them on the tarp and then dragged them a 100 yards it was insane", Clavijo explained.

Several good Samaritans, including two Manatee County Sheriff's deputies, ignored the urgent warning to rescue a pair of beached sea cows in the emptied Sarasota Bay.

He gave the manatees water to help, he wrote.

Walking along hundreds of yards of new shoreline, they came upon two manatees stranded "deep in mud", including one that wasn't moving, reports Fox 13.

They then tried to call local authorities and animal services to help but received no answer.

"We're not actually intervening at this point", Gordon said.

Manatees are protected under federal and Florida law, which states that "it is unlawful for any person, at any time, intentionally or negligently, to annoy, molest, harass or disturb any manatee".

"We took off our shoes and walked out through the shells to find two beached manatees", Sechler wrote.

The viral Facebook post has more than 96,000 likes and 68,000 shares. It was an "absolutely amazing" rescue and "shows what people can do when they come together", says Faradini-Campos.
