On Tuesday, the studio announced that the director of The Force Awakens will return to close out the new Star Wars trilogy following the departure of Colin Trevorrow. The director has bene a fan-favorite amongst Star Wars lovers, Johnson was the director most fans wanted to see take over Episode IX.

J.J. Abrams, who helped reboot the franchise with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", has landed the directing job, Variety has learned. "Whoever does it, I'm going to be really excited to be an audience member again and sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going". Abrams has been chosen to replace Colin Trevorrow to write and direct Star Wars: Episode IX. It was reported that Rian Johnson, who is now finishing this December's The Last Jedi, could step in to take over the next part of the Star Wars saga.

It would be an understatement to say Lucasfilm has had some director issues in the early days of this new Star Wars era.

There were rumors apparently circulating then that the "Jurassic World" director was likely going to lose his gig when his movie "The Book of Henry" premiered to lackluster reviews, and went on to do poorly at the box-office. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed the directorial change in a press release. While his first foray into the "Star Wars" saga became the highest grossing movie in North America with a box office take of more than $936 million, the film was criticized by some for being too derivative of the source material. There is little doubt he will be given great creative control over what exactly Episode IX will finally look like.

JJ Abrams' "The Force Awakens" reunited the original 1977 "Star Wars" actors and introduced a new generation of characters. So he certainly has experience with some larger-than-life figures, which the Star Wars universe is full of.

Johnson, the writer and director for The Last Jedi, could keep carrying the torch and lead the sequel trilogy into its final installment. The most recent shakeup was the removal of Colin Trevorrow from Episode IX.
