The decision to remove the governor, Najmaddin Kareem, came after Kirkuk - an oil-rich province claimed by both the central government in Baghdad and the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq - chose to take part in the KRG referendum.

This was announced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against the background of a referendum in Iraq about Kurdish independence, which the authorities in Baghdad oppose, Reuters reported.

The neighboring countries of Turkey, Iran and Syria also feel that the move would threaten their territorial integrity, as large numbers of Kurdish population live in those countries.

President Barzani slammed the Iraqi parliament's Thursday vote as he delivered a speech to a crowd of thousands of people in Zakho who came out in full force to support the Kurdish referendum.

Kareem, a Kurd, has made several controversial decisions in Kirkuk, including raising the Kurdish flag in Kirkuk city and supporting the independence referendum of the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan.

Israel supports the creation of a Kurdish state.

Kalin on Thursday said: "There will absolutely be consequences for this referendum decision", without elaborating further. A majority voted to remove the governor, lawmaker Husham al-Suhail told Reuters. He refused to give details.

Asked whether parliament had the right to dismiss Kareem, Suhail referred to an article in Iraq's constitution which parliament used as the legal basis for the vote.
