Russian submarines fire seven cruise missiles at Isis militants

Towards war's end in Syria Syria war: Stranded IS convoy reaches Deir al-Zour

The Russian military on Thursday targeted Islamic State militants that were hiding out in the eastern Syrian province of Deir el-Zour.

Seven Kalibr missiles were fired from a pair of submarines in the Mediterranean Sea, Russia's defense ministry said.

The Syrian army and its allies recently broke an Islamic State siege of an enclave in Deir al-Zor that had lasted three years.

The projectiles destroyed control centers, communication hubs and arms dumps being used by the terrorists, the regime said.

ISIS, which has suffered significant losses in Syria and Iraq has launched a race for control of the border with Iraq, now still in the militants' hands.

American-backed Syrian Democratic Forces are also fighting near the city, advancing from the north bank of the Euphrates river, while Assad's forces move in from the south. The militants control less than half the city and are encircled on three sides. "The targets were 500 kilometers to 670 kilometers away".

The extremist group agreed to evacuate territory, for the first time, from a district on the Syria-Lebanon border on August 28.

He said, though, that separating young people from their families is not good either for the young or for the family. In the end, they are the ones who will determine whether Colombia truly has peace after 52 years of civil war.

On Thursday, a surviving Hezbollah fighter was returned to Lebanon.

The convoy was stranded in the desert for about two weeks, even though reports claim that some of the vehicles were able to slip into the militant-held territory.

The head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said buses and vehicles crossed into Deir el-Zour province Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a Kurdish-led offensive, backed by the US-led coalition, is underway in the northern part of the province.

In the aftermath of the agreement, the US-led coalition began conducting air strikes to block the convoy of fighters from reaching their destination.

The proximity of the two forces raises the specter of confrontation, as both sides vie for the border with Iraq and the oil and resources-rich province.
