Equifax hack due to old bug in Apache

What's The Difference Between Equifax, TransUnion And Experian? FAQ on Equifax data breach -- What you should do now: Money Matters
Elaine Woods | 16 September, 2017, 01:08

If you're one of the 143 million Americans who had your personal information stolen by hackers thanks to Equifax, you now need to be on the lookout because thieves may want more from you.

"However, in light of the intense public interest and the potential impact of this matter, I can confirm that FTC staff is investigating the Equifax data breach".

While the Attorney General's office is taking steps of their own to find those responsible and protect from further incidents, consumers can and should educate themselves and take their own action, first and foremost by checking whether they were affected.

Equifax created a website so you can check to see if your personal information may have been affected.

If you decide against a credit freeze, consider placing a fraud alert on your files. Consumers can also implement a credit freeze that prevents would-be scammers from opening new accounts using the victim's identity.

"A couple days ago, Equifax came back and said that that is incorrect and that if you sign up for their credit monitoring it does not waive your right", said Groene.

"When the experts are saying, 'You should do this now, ' it struck panic in me".

By now, you've heard about the breach of the financial records of Equifax, the credit reporting bureau. If the information can't be explained, you will need to call the creditors involved and report the crime to your local police or sheriff's office.

If you think the call is really from a legitimate company, offer to call back - but make sure to check for the phone number yourself, either online or in your records. That's because Equifax is a credit reporting agency, and it holds the personal information of everyone in the country who has ever had credit.

"Step number one - go to equifaxsecurity2017.com and I know that sounds insane because this is the place where you had your information taken, but you have to begin the process in a methodical way. We all just have one", said Denise Groene, state director with the Better Business Bureau. Check your accounts regularly for any charges you do not recognize. The website also has other information about the breach, including contact information for Equifax if you have additional questions.
