Google sued for discrimination against women employees

Due to the extensive records that Google is required to keep regarding pay, job classifications, and other employment records, the plaintiffs hold that although it now does nothing to fix the situation, the company should be well aware the discrimination occurring.

The plaintiffs - a former Google software engineer, a former communications specialist and a former manager - accused the tech major of paying its male staff significantly higher salaries than their female counterparts for work performed in similar roles.

In an interview to the daily, Kelly Ellis, a former Google employee and a lead plaintiff on the case said "We've been talking about these issues for a long time, and it hasn't really changed". The trio charges that Google not only paid them less than men for a similar amount of work, but that women were also more often hired into positions where they were less likely to be promoted. The U.S. Labor Department has an ongoing investigation of Google, alleging gender disparities in pay at the company.

In January, The Department of Labor sued Oracle America Inc, claiming it paid white men more than women and minorities with similar jobs. They are seeking to represent a class of women who worked at Google in California over the last four years. Before the summer, Google got involved in another scandal after a male employee of the company wrote a long manifesto criticizing gender equality attempts at the company.

IN recent months, tech giant Google has been facing problems over treatment towards its female workers amid a media firestorm that has stirred larger debate about gender bias in the male-dominated tech industry. Scigliano maintained that job levels and promotions at the company were determined through "rigorous" committees and undergo review that includes checking for gender bias.

Also, Wisuri says Google kept her in the Sales Enabler career ladder instead of the Sales ladder, limiting her ability to move upward through the company and receive just compensation for her skills and output. A lot of these companies take extra precautions to not "offend" their employees, purposefully create diverse work environments that are not different in thought, shut down conservative views, and even fire employees who dare to question the company's policies. The company's spokesperson, Gina Scigliano, said, "In relation to this particular lawsuit, we'll review it in detail, but we disagree with the central allegations".

The company has ostensibly placed huge pride in its anti-discrimination policies, and consistently releases a "comprehensive and robust analysis of pay across genders".

The suit seeks unspecified "wages due" and damages, as well as shares of Google, profits from the companies "unlawful and/or unfair business practices".
