"It goes on to state that the action is based on the information security risks presented by the use of the products since the software has access to files and privileges on the computers on which it is installed and that it can be exploited by 'cyber actors to compromise those information systems".

Kaspersky products accounted for about 5.5 percent of anti-malware software products worldwide, according to research firm Statista.

The decision came after the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced they would be investigating the Russian company for possible ties to Russian security government security services. Kaspersky software is widely used by consumers in both free and paid versions, raising the question of whether those users should follow the USA government's lead.

"The risk that the Russian government, whether acting on its own or in collaboration with Kaspersky, could capitalize on access provided by Kaspersky products to compromise federal information and information systems directly implicates US national security", the statement adds.

Elaine Duke, the acting secretary of homeland security, issued a Binding Operational Directive this week that calls on us government agencies and departments to find any use of Kaspersky software on their systems within 30 days.

Q: What did the US government actually do?

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov slammed the United States authorities' decision on Kaspersky Lab as politically motivated. It said Thursday that it will continue to get its product to customers "through its website and other prominent retailers".

That means that a Russian business offering cyber-security software may struggle to convince American consumers to buy products that their own government suggests are unsafe.

It also cites a Russian law that allows intelligence agencies to seek information from Kaspersky.

Kaspersky tweeted a screenshot of the invitation that he received from the US House of Representatives' Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Washington's recent attacks on Kaspersky Lab is seen by Moscow as an attempt to undermine efforts to rebuild a working relationship to combat terrorism and to initiate unfair competition in the information field and software market.

But he denied that his company is involved in any Russian spying. The FBI warned industry leaders about potential risks of using Kaspersky products past year.

Nonetheless, Congress is considering legislation that would implement a government-wide ban on Kaspersky products. "Many of those companies will now feel compelled to go through their systems and remove this antivirus program, as well as conduct a risk assessment".
