"When he started out with us at Everton, he just wasn't good at that [communicating]", Moyes told the Daily Mail. "He's come in and already scored a lot of goals for us, so we know what he's about".

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard has insisted that Romelu Lukaku will not be fazed by the prospect of coming up against his former club when the Red Devils welcome Everton to Old Trafford on Sunday.

Mourinho was in full praise about Rooney ahead of his first return to Old Trafford since his summer move to Everton, but was also adamant he did not want the game to be dominated by talk of his return.

The former England worldwide heads back to Old Trafford as the club's all-time leading scorer, having struck 253 goals during a 13-year stint.

Lukaku scored 87 goals in 166 appearances across all competitions for Everton. "I think this Premier League is much more defensive-minded, and much more hard".

Nevertheless, the Toffees boss has been impressed with the side Jose Mourinho has built for this season and he is expecting a much tougher test this time around.

The United manager is insistent that his team's success or failure will not depend exclusively on the form of their main striker, pointing out that they only finished sixth in the Premier League last season despite the contribution of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who scored 28 goals in all competitions.

Speaking to The Times, he said: "They (United) were in touch with my agent and showed a lot of interest".

The Swede, who suffered ligament damage in his right knee against Anderlecht in April, signed a new one year contract with Man United last month.

"So it's not just the striker".

"They wanted me, but a few things happened and I thought Everton would be the best place for me to come. Romelu's team plays different football and the confidence levels are different and it is a team in the second year of its evolution in some aspects".

Mourinho refused to enter into any debate as to how Lukaku and Ibrahimovic compare. And I can name more players who are not performing and that are struggling. I think it's very stupid to compare the incomparable. "While they [defeats] are not enjoyable, you go through them and learn and it will make me a better player".
