Netanyahu-Sisi Meeting Highlights Warming Ties Between Israel and Arab World

From applause to denial Middle East media react to Sisi Netanyahu meeting Ahead of UN Speech, Netanyahu Meets Egypt's Al-Sisi Publicly for First Time

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold his first public meeting with Egyptian President Abd al-Fatah al-Sisi on Monday night in New York City, according to Egyptian media reports. On Tuesday the adulation reached new heights when he not only met in public with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu but clearly enjoyed himself at the same time.

Egypt has been mediating between Abbas' internationally recognised Palestinian Authority located in the West Bank and Hamas, which has controled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

Egypt has become increasingly involved in affairs with the "Israeli" entity.

It followed mediation in Cairo between Mr Abbas' Fatah party and its arch-rival, Hamas. They have, though, met in private - in Aqaba in January 2016 and in Cairo later previous year. According to two participants in the meeting, the Egyptian President sounded optimistic and said Egypt was interested in helping.

But that relationship has been tested since the July 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi and the subsequent bloody crackdown on Morsi's supporters. Trump praised the distinguished relations between the two countries.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signaled he would consider resuming military aid to Egypt which had been frozen because of concerns over its human rights record.

Several hours before meeting Netanyahu, Sisi met with Malcolm Hoenlein, a top official of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

An Israeli-Palestinian peace deal would eliminate "one of the main excuses" used by terrorists in the region, he argued. "It would be utterly ridiculous if Mr Trump doesn't eventually say that", Nabil Shaath, a senior Abbas adviser, told journalists in Ramallah on Monday when asked about the two-state solution.

Sisi hailed the efforts of the United States administration to that end, saying that a fair settlement will lead to a new reality in the Middle East where all peoples can live in stability and security and enjoy development.
