IPhone X faces delays due to parts called 'Romeo and Juliet'

The iPhone X will be in short supply at launch, but that probably won't hurt Apple Poor 3D sensor yields mean Apple may not fulfill all iPhone X preorders until early 2018 – report

There's a lot of hype over Face ID, the facial recognition system of Apple's forthcoming iPhone X, but some of its shortcomings are already becoming clear. Apple says that even it can't access what the Secure Enclave contains. Instead, after scanning they create a mathematical representation based on infrared images. Most important to privacy, however, is the fact that no one-not even Apple-can see the numeric facial imaging data stored in the A11 chip.

Given how many people are holding back from buying a new iPhone precisely because of the X, any further postponement of shipments is likely to translate unfavorably to Apple's quarterly results, not to mention many frustrated users that will be forced to wait longer than expected to get their hands on the precious new iPhone X.

For those anxious that FaceID could be fooled by a printout of the user's face, or a full-on 3D mask based on the user's likeness, Apple went a long way to safeguard the system against it.

As for what's going right with Face ID, beyond the massive demand it seems to be helping to fuel, there are a few items of note.

Take, for example, Apple Senior VP Phil Schiller's statement that Face ID may not be able to distinguish between twins.

Can I turn Face ID off and use my passcode?

"It's harder to replicate a face than it is to replicate a fingerprint", Mogull said. While the chances of someone successfully unlocking your iPhone Touch ID are one in 50,000, that number jumps to one in a million with Face ID, the company said.

What if someone makes a really good mask?

To use Face ID with Apple Pay purchases, users will have to confirm intent to pay by double-clicking the side button, like on the Apple Watch.

Still, in truth, no security technology is completely secure.

It didn't during Apple's September 12 event - at least initially, when senior vice president Craig Federighi tried and failed to demonstrate Face ID for the crowd before switching phones. Apple's software engineering chief Craig Federighi talked about Face ID in various interviews after the iPhone X was revealed earlier this month. The mobile giant appears to have learned from its mistakes after a user embarrassingly fooled its Touch ID fingerprint system just days after the release of the iPhone 5s. The Secure Enclave stores three things: the infrared images and mathematical models of your face that are captured when you setup Face ID, as well as new models that are calculated and saved in the future to help improve matching over time time (more on that in a second).

"You're giving bad guys more and more incentive to try to compromise that secure enclave", he said.
