Today, the Evening Standard reports that Parisian authorities announced plans to ban all combustion-engine cars, including those powered by gasoline, from the city's roads by the year 2030.

France, along with the United Kingdom, made headlines earlier this summer by announcing plans to phase out sales of gasoline- and diesel-engined cars by 2040, but it appears the city of Paris has an even earlier target in mind.

"Transport is one of the main greenhouse gas producers.so we are planning an exit from combustion engine vehicles, or fossil-energy vehicles, by 2030", Christophe Najdovski, an official responsible for transport policy at the mayor's office, said.

On the heels of France and the United Kingdom announcing plans to phase out sales of combustion-engined cars by 2040, the state of California is mulling a similar move much earlier than the 2040 target date, .

The move from Paris City Hall comes as little surprise.

Russakovskii swapped the device with Google , whose engineers determined that the device was registering "phantom" touches. He says the company replied to his initial e-mail within 10 minutes and issued a band-aid patch the day after his report.

Paris has faced rising air pollution in the last few years. The controversial move announced Thursday follows Mayor Anne Hidalgo's plan to ban all diesel cars from the city by 2024, when Paris will host the Summer Olympics. It's also worth noting that Paris served as the host city of the global Paris Climate Accord, a pact to reduce carbon dioxide globally.

But a ban on petrol-fuelled vehicles marks a radical escalation of policy in the world's most visited city. City dwellers there rely heavily on public transportation and heavily utilize bike sharing networks and scooters.

California state Assemblyman Phil Ting plans to introduce a new bill to ban fossil-fuel-powered cars by 2040.

"This government goal affects the whole French territory, rural zones included", the Paris City Hall statement said.

There are about 32 million household cars in France, where the population is about 66 million, according to 2016 data from the Argus, an automobile industry publication.
