Advertising consultant Cindy Gallop, founder of the USA division of advertising firm Bartie Bogle Hegarty, is leading calls for a day long Twitter boycott led by women until midnight tonight in a show of solidarity with actress Rose McGowan - who was handed a 12-hour suspension for tweeting a private phone number.

McGowan has been one of the most public detractors of Weinstein since allegations of his sexual misconduct surfaced, encouraging her #ROSEARMY to join her in criticising people who enabled, covered up or defended the alleged abuse. According to a tweet, Twitter suspended the account because she posted a "private phone number".

In a string of fiery tweets, McGowan said she repeatedly warned Amazon about "HW" and "begged" the company not to work with the movie mogul but was told by an unnamed studio executive that "it hadn't been proven".

"THERE ARE POWERFUL FORCES AT WORK", McGowan wrote on Instagram alongside a screenshot of the 12-hour suspension notice.

Twitter clarified that the offending tweet had been removed, and that Ms. McGowan's account had been unlocked.

McGowan has yet to comment on the site since her account was reactivated.

McGowan has been a loud voice on social media advocating for victims of sexual harassment and abuse following the multiple allegations against disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

For example: Early Friday morning, director Ava DuVernay tweeted, "Calling white women allies to recognize conflict of #WomenBoycottTwitter for women of color who haven't received support on similar issues".

"Twitter is proud to empower and support the voices on our platform, especially those that speak truth to power", the rep continued.
