Clinton campaign, DNC paid for research that led to Russia dossier
26 October, 2017, 00:23
Shortly after a report emerged Tuesday evening claiming that Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee in part funded a dossier containing explosive allegations about President Donald Trump's links to Russian Federation, the Republican National Committee trumpeted the story in outrage. The Washington Post says an "unknown Republican client" paid for research during the primary season.
It has been reported for about a year that a Republican donor provided initial funding for the dossier, which was compiled by ex British intelligence officer Christopher Steele.
"I have no idea what Fusion or Steele were paid", he wrote in another tweet, "but if even a shred of that dossier ends up helping Mueller, it will prove money well spent".
"When I tried to report this story, Clinton campaign lawyer @marceelias pushed back vigorously, saying 'You (or your sources) are wrong, '" he tweeted. Certainly there's nothing unusual about a campaign or a party committee investing in opposition research, and all the story shows at this point is that said opposition research ultimately led to some very odd materials.
US intelligence agencies later released a public assessment which asserted that Russian Federation intervened in the 2016 election to aid Trump.
As for the DNC, well, it now has something to deal with that's a bit more pressing than the question of exactly how many former Clinton and Sanders supporters sit on various committees.
Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, reportedly continued funding the research until October 2016, right before election day.
The letter, sent Tuesday by the general counsel of Perkins Coie to a lawyer for Fusion GPS, was meant to release the research firm from its obligation to keep confidential the identity of the law firm client.

Many Kenyans on social media saw the shooting as intimidation of the Supreme Court before it hears the crucial case on Wednesday. Kenyan police fired teargas and shots in the air to scatter a small number of demonstrators in Nairobi on Tuesday.
The battle over the unverified dossier is a crucial front in the broader political fight over the Trump White House, the public's perceptions of the president and his stunning election win.
The dossier has become a lightning rod amid the intensifying investigations into the Trump campaign's possible connections to Russian Federation. "But let's be clear, there is a serious federal investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation, and the American public deserves to know what happened". The Post report indicates that's when Mr. Elias got involved.
Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was chair of the DNC when Fusion GPS was hired in 2016, told Fox News that she was unaware of the arrangement.
Officials have said the Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed some of the information in the dossier.
Trump alleged that "only because it's going to come out in a court case, they said yes, they did it, they admitted it".
Special counsel Robert Mueller and a number of congressional panels are investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether members of the Trump campaign team were involved. According to a copy of the dossier published by BuzzFeed this year, the earliest report from Steele dates to June 2016, two months later.
