US unemployment rate falls to 4.1 per cent, lowest in 17 years The Economy Gained 261000 Jobs Last Month

The unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1%, its lowest level since December 2000.

September's payrolls data, initially reported as the first drop in seven years, were revised to show employers actually created 18,000 new jobs that month, extending the economy's streak of job gains to a record 85 straight months.

"The seemingly positive headline in the household survey masked some bearish details, as the one-tenth decline in the unemployment rate occurred amid a 0.4 percentage point plunge in the labor force participation rate, the biggest monthly decline in four years", Duncan said.

The economy added 35,300 jobs in October but the unemployment rate crept higher, with more young people looking for work, Statistics Canada said Friday. The leisure and hospitality sector added 106,000 jobs after losing 102,000 in September.

The falling jobless rate is likely to sharpen the debate among Federal Reserve policymakers, who appear set to raise the benchmark interest rate next month despite stubbornly low inflation.

Employers added 261,000 net new positions as businesses reopened in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, although the rebound was much lower than economists had forecast. Prices of exports fell 0.6 per cent, while volumes grew 0.3 per cent.

The Federal Open Market Committee did not raise short-term rates following its most recent meeting on November 1. "The bottom-line is that slack in the labor market is receding but the hiring trend is slowing and wage gains remain muted".

Last month's acceleration in employment growth re-inforces the Fed's assessment on Wednesday that "the labour market has continued to strengthen and that economic activity has been rising at a solid rate despite hurricane-related disruptions".
