Saudi Arabia shoots down missile aimed at Riyadh airport, Yemen rebels claim responsibility Loud explosion heard near Riyadh airport

Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for an explosion in Riyadh, saying they fired a long-range ballistic missile that travelled 500km over the border with Saudi Arabia.

The attack came after the Houthi militia failed to launch a missile at Saudi Arabia on October 30.

The Houthis have reportedly claimed today's attack.

Saudi Arabia's Civil Aviation Authority said the missile did not cause any damage to the King Khalid International Airport and that flights were not disrupted.

The Saudi military may have successfully used a missile defence system to shoot down the incoming threat.

The kingdom is leading a campaign against Iran-allied rebels, Saudi television Al Arabiya reported.

A Saudi-led coalition became involved in 2015 to help prop up Hadi's government after Shiite Huthis seized the capital Sanaa.

The coalition statement reviewed the incident and quoted its spokesman as saying the target was the gathering point for some armed Houthi militants. The rebels are at war with the kingdom. Iran denies it has provided material support, though it acknowledges its political support of the Houthis.

More than 10,000 people have been killed and the conflict has created one of the world's biggest humanitarian disasters. The kingdom has also imposed an air and sea blockade on Yemen.

Rebels continue to hold much of Yemen and the United Nations has warned the country is on the brink of starvation.

The United States backs the Saudi-led coalition with weapons, air refueling and intelligence.
