Trump's former campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos, has pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with Russian officials.

Sessions later recused himself from all matters related to the campaign, citing his support for the President's successful bid.

Blumenthal wrote Sessions that he should "immediately come before the Senate Judiciary Committee to update [his] testimony and correct any omissions and any statements that may have been incorrect or misleading".

The TV personality, who has been engaged in a decade-long feud with Trump, was quick to praise Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his ongoing probe into possible ties between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation.

Jeff Sessions testifying during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in Washington in October.

TRUMP: You know, the saddest thing is that because I'm the president of the United States, I am not supposed to be involved with the Justice Department. Sessions has no clear recollection of Papadopoulos and doesn't recall any further interactions with him, including phone calls or emails, the person said.

Sessions' discussion with Page will fuel further scrutiny about what the attorney general knew about connections between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation - and communications about Russian Federation that he did not disclose despite a persistent line of questioning in three separate hearings this year.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican member of the Judiciary Committee, said it makes sense to ask Sessions to clarify the chain of events and how he reconciles it with his testimony before the committee.

Franken asked: "If there is any evidence that anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicated with the Russian government in the course of this campaign, what will you do?"

"Ultimately, whether or not he committed perjury, will be again, I believe, Bob Mueller's call", Franken said.

The person familiar with Sessions' activity during the campaign said his testimony has been truthful and consistent.

"Let's remember that this is about Russian interference in our election and that is at the very heart of our system of democracy and we're trying to find out whether the Trump campaign cooperated", Franken said.

According to aides to Sessions who weren't authorized to speak publicly about the matter, the attorney general did not give false testimony and disputes any description of the March 31 meeting that suggests Papadopoulos informed those present that he was in contact with the Russian government. "There were questions that elicited exactly the kind of information that the Papadopoulos plea agreement made".

Asked at a Senate hearing last month whether he believed Trump campaign surrogates had communications with Russians, Sessions replied, "I did not and I'm not aware of anyone else that did, and I don't believe it happened".
