Liberia Election on Hold, Supreme Court Orders
07 November, 2017, 00:07
In his ruling Monday, one day to the earlier scheduled presidential run-off on November 7, Chief Justice Francis Korkpor of the Supreme Court said the electoral body ought to have investigated the claims by the disgruntled political parties before it reached the Supreme Court.
Vice President Joseph Boakai, left, is due to face former footballer star George Weah in Liberia's presidential runoff vote.
But Liberty Party presidential candidate Charles Brumskine, who came in third last month, has alleged ballot stuffing and false voter registration cards marred the election, allegations backed up by Boakai.
"Supporters of Weah feel Brumskine and others are prolonging the process while others feel the law should take its course", he added.
"The NEC (National Elections Commission) is stopped and prohibited from conducting the run off election until the complaint filed by the petitions is investigated by the NEC", the Supreme Court ruling said.
Although Weah and Boakai won most votes, neither scored more than the 50 percent needed to become president. Boakai is accusing the president of interfering in the October election by holding private meetings with election magistrates.
Addressing the court's five justices last Friday, Brumskine cited "gross irregularities".

He has called for the electoral commission to be sacked even as she gave it her full backing, and this week he accused Sirleaf of having a hand in starting the nation's 1989-2003 civil war, in which a quarter of a million people died.
Late Monday, he said the Liberty Party doesn't have confidence in the ability of the National Elections Commission to partially investigate its complaint, and would soon be asking its leaders to step aside.
Global donors have poured billions of dollars into Liberia since Sirleaf was elected in 2005, and are eager to see completed what will be the country's first democratic transition in seven decades.
