Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe fired his Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday as the battle to succeed the aging leader between the country's First Lady and VP intensified.

The 75-year-old Mnangagwa was former intelligence chief, security and justice ministers before.

Mnangagwa had been vice president since 2014 when his predecessor, Joice Mujuru, was sacked for allegedly plotting to oust Mugabe.

Mnangagwa's dismissal is with immediate effect for among other reasons disloyalty, disrespect, deceit and being unreliable.

"It had become evident that his conduct in the discharge of his duties had become inconsistent with his official responsibilities".
