She would befriend the elderly men through a matchmaking agency, usually going for those who are childless and well-to-do.

70-year-old Japenese woman has been sentenced to death for the murder of three men, including her husband, and another attempted murder. The infamous killer is also known as Black Widow in the Japanese media. Her lawyers have filed an appeal against what they call an "unjust" verdict.

She reportedly inherited around one billion yen (Rs 57 crore approximately) in all, although she later lost some of it through the stock market.

Isao died at the couple's home in Muko, Kyoto Prefecture, in December 2013, about a month after their marriage. Her previous three husbands also died, the Post reported, but she was not charged in connection to their deaths.

The Kitakyushu-born Kakehi first got married at 24 to a former truck driver. But following his death in 1994, the business went bankrupt and her house was put up for auction, prompting her to ask neighbors for a loan. His death had not been seen as suspicious but was the first of many eventually linked to her.

During the trial Kakchi admitted to killing Isao Kakehi, saying he had not treated her well financially, but later retracted it.

Kakehi initially refused to speak when her trial began in June but later stunned the court by admitting having killed her fourth husband in 2013. They accused her of plotting her crimes well in advance, including helping to prepare notary documents linked to wills.

The court dismissed her lawyers' argument that she had dementia.

More than 560 people lined up for the 51 seats in the courtroom to hear Tuesday's ruling, NHK public television reported. I have no intention of hiding the guilt. Judge Ayako Nakagawa said Kakehi was fully responsible for her actions at the time, and that it was a carefully premeditated crime aimed at amassing inheritance money.

Due to a lack of physical evidence showing her involvement in the cases, with, for example, cyanide compounds that she is believed to have used not being identified, the focus of the trial was the court's judgment on circumstantial evidence collected by the prosecutors.
