Apple Is Moving Forward on an Augmented Reality Headset

Apple is building augmented reality glasses that overlay the digital world on top of the real world Report Apple is reportedly building an augmented reality headset that might launch as soon

Apple's interest in augmented reality has always been known. Microsoft's HoloLens, for instance, can be used in the enterprise to aid people in their jobs. Now, the company is looking to the future, with plans to ready an augmented reality headset by 2019.

According to Gurman Apple is being "very aggressive" with its timeline and expect the headset to ship by 2020.

Apple has been working on augmented reality for a few years.

The report also notes that there has been broader investment by entertainment companies as well as technology firms, pointing out the significant investment by companies such as Six Flags Entertainment in its effort to update its theme parks with mixed reality technology.

Apple is said to be developing its own "system-on-a-package" chip for this AR headset, much like the one we see in the Apple Watch.

Apple has been talking a lot about AR lately. The standalone AR headset will reportedly feature a new chip and run a custom operating system based on iOS, internally dubbed "rOS" - short for "reality operating system". As expected, Apple will be using its own SoC design to power the headset, rather than relying on a third-party to make a chip that meets its requirements/expectations.

In a recent earnings call, he said: "We're already seeing things that will transform the way you work, play, connect and learn". "I can tell you that the technology itself doesn't exist to do [AR glasses] in a quality way", Cook said to Vogue in October after dismissing "rumours and gossip" about the idea.

In his interview with Nikkei, Catcher CEO Allen Horng said that his company is now working on an AR device, but stopped short of specifically naming Apple. And the Facebook-owned Oculus recently launched an Oculus for Business bundle and a less expensive Oculus Go headset for enterprise use. As we've seen from other AR developers, minimizing technology to work in an AR headset is still a hard proposition.

CEO Mark Bertolini says Aetna presented Apple with a list of the top drivers of health costs and the two companies have been working together on apps that can it can use to provide incentives to make healthier choices.

The limitation today is that we have to hold our smartphone or tablet up to our face to experience AR. But while we wait for a hardware announcement, Apple will reportedly release a new version of ARKit next year that will have more advanced tracking abilities.
